Furniture Trends: Cage Frames

everyman-cinema-furniture-slider.jpg

Cage frames are a variation of the trend in thin legs as a feature on chairs, primarily in metal but also now occurring in wood. The cage frame in this instance is more like an ornamental bird cage, used to decoratively impress, rather than a gabion style cage or bench that has become popular in outdoor settings.

Gabion bench

What is a gabion?

A gabion (from Italian gabbione meaning "big cage"; from Italian gabbia and Latin cavea meaning "cage") is a cage, cylinder, or box filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering such as sea defences, road building, and landscaping. Gabions can be filled with rocks or pebbles or other items such as footballs to create an impressive outdoor seating area. Gabions are particularly useful if the furniture needs to be permanent, fixed or hard to move.

Watch our supplier manufacture a bespoke low stool with a cage frame for Everyman Cinema.

The stool was constructed from a mild steel cage-style base, blackened to a natural finish, which will also seal out any moisture. It was then fitted with a domed seat pad upholstered in leather. Each stool took around 45 minutes to weld and was produced in small batches for several of the Everyman Cinema spaces. Big thanks to Paul for the video.
