5 things we're excited about at IMM Cologne 2018

It's that time of year again, where we look to Cologne for interior design inspiration for the months ahead. Here's a light taster of some of the delights on show this year, though we expect many surprises from the week ahead. Keep an eye on our social feeds for live updates from imm Cologne and watch out for a best-of blog coming soon.

1. Light of the Abyss installation for Emu

The deep sea is the inspiration for studio Chiaramonte Marin's installation Light of the Abyss for Emu. They've taken the Emus Cone light and created a new playful lampshade with creatures from the murky depths. Next comes our favourite bit: an underwater coral formed out of chairs!

2. STRUCTURES - exploring rugs and furniture

STRUCTURES is a unique collaboration between Berlin-based Studio Greiling and Kinnasand LAB to be presented during IMM, which explores the experience of rugs and furniture.

Comprising a series of benches, ottomans and daybeds made from powder coated steel tubes, STRUCTURES sees the structure beneath each rug as a tool; an architectural support that lifts the rug from the floor to a new height, elevating it into a new dimension: furniture.

Creator Katrin Greiling says “Creating this limited series of furniture for the Kinnasand LAB project, I aimed to bring the textures and richness of the rugs closer to the hands and body, enabling visitors to the Kinnasand stand to experience the character of each individual rug.”

Tonon Fl@t Chairs

3. Product launch: Tonon's Fl@t Chair

Launching at imm 18,  Fl@t is a thin, padded and flexible shape, curved to form a body and fixed by a decorative steel frame. An extra selling point of the Fl@t Chair is that the body can be shipped flat and assembled at destination. Available in different materials, the chair will be shown for the first time covered in fabric and leather at Cologne.

4.Product Debut: Ton's Chips Lounge Chair

Yup, it's a chair inspired by a Pringles crisp, proving that even furniture designers can't stop once they pop.

Chips is an oversized chair with a large backrest made of perforated fabric giving it a visually light feel but a comfortable spot to lean against. Paired with upholstered cushions for additional comfort, Chips was created for Cologne as part of the Das Haus project.

5. Trying out the Softline Swing Chair (and others!)

Me & U is an upholstered indoor swing hung from the ceiling. It’s a fun and eye-catching accessory that creates a wonderful atmosphere in lounge areas and lobbies. It's also a trade fair favourite as it's a good seat to test out when you need to give your feet a break after a hard day looking at furniture!
